Inclement Weather Procedures

The safety of our students and staff is our primary concern. Please use your best judgement in applying the following procedures. Always err on the side of safety. Remember employees; you must notify your supervisor if you cannot come to work.

Connect-ED messages for delays and closings will be sent between 5:00 and 5:45 a.m. Information will also be posted on the main page of the I-SS website, the district's social media pages, and local TV and radio stations will be notified by 6:00 a.m. The most reliable place to check on closings is our website: https://www.iss.k12.nc.us and on the district's social media pages, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Other sources are WBTV-3, WSOC-9, NBC-36, WXII-TV12, WAME (92.9 FM, 550 AM) and WSIC (1400 AM).

For Early Colleges and Career & College Promise students: Mitchell Community College class cancellations are determined and announced by Mitchell Community College (not Iredell-Statesville Schools). Therefore, high school students taking college classes via MCC must follow the announcements made by MCC on their website.

Inclement Weather Calls

1. Closed

2. Closed with an Optional Teacher Workday

Students:

School is closed for all students.
Prime Time will be cancelled.
All athletic events and other after school activities are cancelled.

Staff:

10-month, 11-month, and 12-month staff will be expected to report to work as usual if they feel safe to do so or use appropriate leave options.
Prime Time and School Nutrition employees must use appropriate leave options.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #7550.

3. Closed with an Optional Teacher Workday with Delay

Students:

School is closed for all students.
Prime Time will be cancelled.
All athletic events and other after school activities are cancelled.

Staff:

10-month, 11-month, and 12-month staff will be expected to report to work as usual if they feel safe to do so within 3 hours.
Prime Time and School Nutrition employees must use appropriate leave options.
All staff with shifts that begin after the delay should report with caution at regular time or use appropriate leave options for missed or reduced shifts.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #7550.

4. Delayed by One Hour for Students and Staff

Students:

School will open ONE hour later.
Prime Time morning care will also operate on a ONE-Hour Delay.

Staff:

All staff will be expected to report with caution within ONE hour of their regular shift start time and use appropriate leave for missed or reduced shifts.
All staff with shifts that begin after the delay should report with caution at regular time or use appropriate leave options for missed or reduced shifts.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #7550.

5. Delayed by Two Hours for Students and Staff

Students:

School will open TWO hours later.
Prime Time morning care will also operate on a TWO-Hour Delay.

Staff:

All staff will be expected to report with caution within TWO hours of their regular shift start time and use appropriate leave for missed or reduced shifts.
All staff with shifts that begin after the delay should report with caution at regular time or use appropriate leave options for missed or reduced shifts.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #7550.

6. Delayed by Three Hours for Students and Staff

Students:

School will open THREE hour later.
Prime Time morning care will also operate on a THREE-Hour Delay.

Staff:

All staff will be expected to report with caution within THREE hours of their regular shift start time and use appropriate leave for missed or reduced shifts.
All staff with shifts that begin after the delay should report with caution at regular time or use appropriate leave options for missed or reduced shifts.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #7550.

10. Unscheduled Early Dismissal

Students:

Car riders should be picked up immediately.
Bus riders will be taken home early.
Prime Time will not operate if school closes early.
All athletic events and other after school activities are cancelled.

Staff:

School staff may not leave any students unattended.
All staff members are to use appropriate leave options if their workday is reduced.
All staff with shifts beginning after the early release time, must report with caution at regular time without delay or use appropriate leave options for missed or reduced shifts.
Prime Time employees should not report to work if schools and offices are closed by noon.

11. Virtual/Remote Student Day; Employee Telework

Students:

Students will not report to campus; however, attendance will be taken remotely.
Prime Time will be cancelled.
All athletic events and other after school activities are cancelled.
Students are expected to complete assignments and participate in virtual instruction as communicated from the student's teacher(s).

Virtual/Remote Student Day: A day when attendance will be taken and students are expected to complete assignments and participate in virtual instruction as communicated from the child's teacher(s).

Staff:

Employees may telework if available; with the approval of the supervisor.
Teachers are expected to communicate assignments and/or instructions with students virtually.
Telework may not be an option for all job classifications.
Prime Time and School Nutrition employees must use appropriate leave options unless approved by their supervisor.

All employees have the options outlined in Board Policy #750 3.

Telework: The ability to complete expected job responsibilities without reporting to the assigned worksite.

12. Virtual/Remote Student Day

Students:

Students will not report to campus; however, attendance will be taken remotely.
Prime Time will be cancelled.
All athletic events and other after school activities are cancelled.
Students are expected to complete assignments and participate in virtual instruction as communicated from the student's teacher(s).

Staff:

10-month, 11-month, and 12-month staff will be expected to report to work as usual if they feel safe to do so or use appropriate leave options. Annual Leave is not an option for certified staff on this day, as this day is counted as a regular school day.
Prime Time and School Nutrition employees must use appropriate leave options unless approved by their supervisor.

BOARD POLICY ON INCLEMENT WEATHER ABSENCES

Policy Code #7550 - Absences Due to Inclement Weather

On a day that employees have the option to report for a workday, but pupils are not required to attend school due to inclement weather, employees have the following options:

Report to work;
Take accumulated annual (vacation) leave; (half/whole day or hourly increments)
Take accumulated personal leave, if available (teachers only); (Code 26 - half or whole day, only)
Take leave without pay;
Use compensatory leave already accumulated; or (hourly increments only)
Make up the time missed.

If an employee elects to make up time, it must be a mutually agreed upon time between the employee and the immediate supervisor. For 10-month employees, it must be within the regular 10 month employment.

When the school district is closed to staff and students due to inclement weather, the board will consider options for addressing the missed days, giving the greatest weight to how to best maintain the opportunity and environment for student learning.
